Social Listening Blog: Starbucks

I have worked as a barista for some time so coffee culture is something I follow, including new trends and what people are talking about. People on social media are currently talking about Starbucks' fall menu, menu changes, and new drink releases. Starbucks is one of the largest coffee chains in the United States with locations on every corner. With fall, or as Starbucks calls it Pumpkin Latte Season (PLS), coffee sales are at their peak.

Starbucks Coffee Company value proposition: deliver premium quality products, a cafe experience as a third-party place, and personalized beverages.

Starbucks' fall menu was released in September and runs through early November. Many customers were excited to see PSL season return. On Starbucks' fall menu announcement post, @Itsme commented, "FINALLY." Others were disappointed by changes to the menu, including the absence of the Apple Crisp drink. Under the same post, @ella commented, "Where is apple crisp." As the season continues, people are still posting about Starbucks' fall menu on social media. On TikTok, @KacyPeebles reminded followers that PSL’s are only available once a year and encouraged them to enjoy one before the season ends. In response, @Rocio commented, "My husband got me one almost every day for two weeks. I got tired of it, and he said it's not here forever." Another user, @arielverv, replied, "You're so wise. Omw to treat myself." Consumers also enjoy the release of new drinks. Recent launches include the Aerocano, Pink Protein Drink, and Iced Pecan Sticky Bun Latte. Under @lorraaaag new drink review post, @Chy commented, "Going to try this tomorrow morning."

Starbucks has 17.5 million followers on Instagram and posts two to three times per week. Their content highlights new drink releases, celebrity collaborations, and aesthetics that align with their brand. On TikTok, Starbucks has 3.5 million followers and shares similar content, although engagement appears lower than on Instagram. Their marketing focuses on visually appealing content, seasonal drinks, storytelling, and lifestyle themes. Influencers such as @PaigePaul and @BelmontCameli have recently helped promote such marketing. Starbucks' presence on Instagram and TikTok reflects its brand identity and culture. On TikTok, Starbucks also features barista-generated content through @StarbucksPartners, targeting a younger Gen Z audience with relatable posts. The company uses separate accounts, such as @StarbucksNews, and maintains accounts for different countries to tailor content to specific audiences.

Starbucks' visually appealing content and seasonal drinks engage customers while keeping them informed about new products. Through storytelling, Starbucks is not just selling a cup of coffee but creating experiences. For example, a recent post featuring social media influencer Paige Paul highlights balancing business ownership and farm life while enjoying Starbucks' protein cold foam. These kinds of posts share interesting stories and real-life experiences that help create a stronger connection with consumers. I find Starbucks' marketing of limited-time products especially engaging. Whether it is a seasonal drink or a holiday cup, these products generate excitement and are frequently shared on social media by consumers. Most recently, Starbucks' fall menu, including the Pumpkin Cream Chai and Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL), created significant engagement. The company also released a Peanuts and Starbucks merchandise collaboration alongside its fall beverages, which attracted a lot of attention from customers who waited in line overnight to get their hands on one of the cups. Starbucks' variety of social media accounts, each focused on specific audiences or topics, demonstrates how the company effectively engages its target market. In addition, partnerships with influencers and celebrities help expand Starbucks' reach and connect with a broader audience. When operating in the social media space, brands like Starbucks face the challenge of maintaining customer engagement and relevance as trends, consumer preferences, and algorithms change rapidly

Starbucks mostly responds to short comments with positive emojis, and their replies are often brief and generic. They could create more personalized and meaningful responses to build stronger human connections and increase engagement.

Overall, Starbucks has the largest social media presence in the coffee industry and connects with consumers through engaging content and seasonal products. While Starbucks creates strong content, if I were the brand manager, I would focus more on relationship building and real-time conversations. I would respond to comments with follow-up questions that encourage discussion and share more customer stories and experiences. This approach could help consumers feel more connected to and included in the Starbucks community while humanizing the brand. I also appreciated Starbucks' employee creator program because it gives the brand a more authentic voice.
